"Life is too short to be subtle."
This book was a hard one for me. The subject matter was a personal trigger but I loved the story and I knew I had to push through. At 14% in and I'm bawling uncontrollably and let me tell you, books don't generally make me cry. Sure I get the feels, but tears, not often. This was my first BN Toler book but holy hell he woman can write. The words flow effortlessly off the page and the story draws you in from the prologue.
This book grabbed my heart, ripped it out and stomped on it, but I loved every page, every word, every tear. I fell in love with little Neena, a 12 year old girl who wanted nothing more that to meet her father before she died. My heart broke for her mom Clara as she watched her baby grow sicker and sicker with not chance of recovery and I loved Paul who didn't know his daughter existed but stepped up when he found out and did everything he could to make his daughter's last few months epic.
Paul and Clara have a complicated past, full of heartbreak and hurt but they put aside their feelings to focus on their daughter. This book made me cry like my heart was breaking but it also made me smile through my tears. This wasn't a love story, it was a story of love
