Synopsis
Phoenix /fēniks/: (in classical mythology) a unique bird inhabiting the Arabian Desert that burned itself on a funeral pyre before rising from the ashes with renewed youth to live through another cycle. This isn’t mythology, it’s war, and Hendy is left in the hands of Hell’s cruelest gatekeepers. His team is killed before his very eyes, and despite his efforts to save them, he’s captured and subjected to merciless torture—losing virtually every piece of his identity but his pulse. After his rescue, he returns home from Afghanistan, saddled with facing the daunting task of healing his physical scars as well as the invisible ones—his emotional demons. Dr. Presley Cole isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. Embarking on a new journey, she makes it her mission to prove to Hendy that his life isn’t over; that he’s worthy of love. Because sometimes even a phoenix needs help to rise...

Excerpt:
We both sit frozen, my stare locking onto her lips. They look unimaginably soft, but it’s her eyes that continue to mesmerize me. Like she can peer inside, like she notices what I keep locked deep within, that she can— Rrrrrrrrr! Jolting from the loud vibration of her cell phone on the lacquered bar top, Presley jerks away. She grabs her phone like it’s a lifeline as the screen lights up with the name Dylan, signifying an incoming text message. She scans the message, and I can’t help but notice it’s a generic text saying good night and he’d talk to her the following day. And a part of me feels a little…jealous. Shit. Seriously, man. Get it together. You shouldn’t be getting close to another guy’s woman. But I’m not getting close.

I’m having a fun conversation with a woman who happens to also be my doctor. A woman who’s helped me tremendously in such a short period. A woman who is incredibly smart and beautiful. A woman who doesn’t cringe in horror when she looks at me—who doesn’t appear to register the presence of my scars. A woman who’s a trivia nerd like me. Damn if that last one doesn’t give me some warm fucking fuzzies. I may have been with more than my allotted share of women who had an ass ton of space between the ears, but make no mistake…nothing turns me on more than a woman who’s smart as a whip.

And yeah, I got a semi during Jeopardy, hearing her softly spoken answers each time Alex read a clue. I’m a sicko, I know. But shit, she’s got beauty, brains, and not to mention, she’s incredibly kind. This Dylan guy had better realize how good he has it. She reaches for her purse, reacting a split second too late to me slipping money to Ryan to pay our tabs.
“Wait! You can’t—” I cut her off with a look of faux sternness.

“You didn’t have to humor me and watch the game with me.” A college football game that consisted of two small schools, no less, but it served as an excuse to get out of the house for a bit. While I hate having to hide behind my ball cap, it doesn’t mean I want to become a damn recluse. “Or share a meal with me.”

“It was my pleasure. But at least let me take care of the tip.” Opening her wallet, she tries to produce her share. Before she can pluck any bills from it, I lay my hand over hers. She doesn’t immediately look up to meet my eyes; instead, she appears transfixed by the sight of our hands together, and at the contrast in coloring, my darker, tanned skin to her fairer skin. It’s then my mind veers off like the old Hendy. To the fucking gutter. Because I imagine linking my fingers through hers while I fuck her against the wall, counter, bed—wherever—all the while whispering in her ear the other naughty things I plan to do to her. Except she’s taken. I need to remember that.

And I sure as shit am not delusional enough to think anyone could love someone who looks the way I do. Least of all, someone as beautiful and sweet as Presley Cole.

Mentally shaking off my thoughts and removing my hand from hers, I wink. “Consider it my treat,” I add softly, “for putting up with me these past few weeks.” What I get in return is an overly bright smile laced with a tinge of panic. She has such an unnerving way of seeing through me that I hope she didn’t see through to my inappropriate thoughts from seconds ago.

“It’s been a pleasure, Hendy.” Slipping off the barstool, I wait for her to grab her purse. Presley and I wave at Ryan, thanking him again as we exit and step out into the typical Florida still-humid-as-hell-even-though-it’s-evening weather.

“Where are you parked?” It’s dark, and although Fernandina Beach, especially the downtown area, is much like Mayberry where the worst crime that occurs is shoplifting a pack of chewing gum, I need to see her safely to her car. Lord knows I gave my mother more than her share of gray hairs as a hell-raiser back in the day, but there’s no denying she raised me to be a gentleman.

“Just over there.” Presley gestures to the small parking lot nearby, a mere four yards away from where we stand. She pauses on the sidewalk, appearing nervous, and her eyes flit to me before darting away. “Thanks again for tonight.” I watch as she regains her composure, returning to doctor mode before meeting my gaze. “I’ll see you for your adjustment tomorrow.” Then she turns to step off the sidewalk, intent on crossing the street. Without me. Running a hand down my face with a silent groan, I quickly cross the street, following her.

Approaching where she’s standing at her car, I call out her name as her vehicle’s lights flash twice when she unlocks it with her key fob. “Presley.” Drawing to a stop a foot away from her, I get this strange tightness in my chest at the fact she’s leaving me to head home. Stupid as hell, but there’s no denying it. There’s just something about her. But she belongs to—is engaged to marry—someone else. Knock it off, man. Yet when she peers up at me with those eyes—one blue and one green—I could get lost in their depths. Reaching for the door handle, I offer a smile and open the car door for her. “Get in. I want to make sure you leave here safe and sound.” At my words, I see something flicker in her eyes. And I know, at this moment, if she says anything remotely sweet to me right now, there’s a good chance it’ll send me crossing that line. And I can’t have that. I’ve got a reverse case of Florence Nightingale syndrome. That’s got to be it. Which is why I add my next words. “Gotta get you home safe so you can see your man.” Fuck. It leaves a nasty taste in my mouth to utter that shit. Reminds me of getting the damn desert sand in my mouth when we were out in the middle of nowhere on a mission. That shit makes you want to spit, clean out your damn mouth, and rid yourself of that grittiness.

Her expression is shuttered, smile stiff, and her voice subdued. “Thanks again.” Closing the door after she’s safely inside and buckled up, I offer a quick nod, tugging the brim of my ball cap lower as I turn to make my way to my truck, which is parked along the curb near the bar. I don’t look back—no quick glance—because the disappointment that the night has to end makes me feel bad enough. But of all people, I should know best that all good things must come to an end.

re·demp·tion
rəˈdem(p)SH(ə)n/
noun
  1. 1.
the action of saving or being saved from sin, error, or evil."God's plans for the redemption of his world"

Brody Scott has a secret, one that plagues him and haunts him, one he cannot move on from. Grace needs a savior whether she knows it or not and Brody is determined to right his wrongs and be the hero Grace desperately needs.

Brody may be the sweetest, most kind hearted rock star in the history of book boyfriends. That man is downright swoony!! He's not your typical bad boy but when he gets Grace in the bedroom...well, I'll let you find out for yourself!! Hot! Hot! Hot!

Grace lives her life with a shield around her heart but our boy Brody does not let that stop him. He busts through those barriers and makes her forget what she was protecting herself from.
The story was a little slow and it seemed to take forever for us to find out what Brody was hiding but overall I liked it. I didn't read the other books in the series and at times I wasn't sure of some of the references for the supporting characters but It was a pretty good standalone. It has some angst and some drama and lots of sexy time. The characters were likable and the supporting characters were great.

3.5 stars.

Revelry release and review!!

Title: Revelry
Author: Kandi Steiner
Release Date: April 20, 2017
Add to TBR

From the bestselling author of Weightless and A Love Letter to Whiskey

Wren Ballard is trying to find herself.

She never expected to be divorced at twenty-seven, but now that the court date has passed, it’s official. The paperwork is final. Her feelings on it aren’t.

Spending the summer in a small mountain town outside Seattle is exactly what she needs. The peaceful scenery is a given, the cat with the croaky meow is a surprise, but the real kicker? A broody neighbor with nice arms, a strange reputation, and absolutely no interest in her.

Anderson Black is perfectly fine being lost.

He doesn’t care about the town’s new resident — he’s too busy fighting his own demons. But when he’s brought face to face with Wren, he can see her still-fresh wounds from a mile away. What he doesn’t see coming is his need to know who put them there — or his desperation to mend them.

Sometimes getting lost is the way to find yourself. Sometimes healing only adds a new scar. And sometimes the last place you expected to be is exactly where you find home.

I had just grabbed my oversized hat and slipped my sunglasses on when I spotted Anderson walking up the drive with a large trash bag slung over his shoulder. He wore a simple, black V-neck and distressed jeans, an outfit way too dark and hot for the heat. A light sheen of sweat gathered on his neck as he made his way toward my cabin, his eyes hidden behind all-black sunglasses.

"Change your mind?" I asked, not even fighting the grin on my face as I walked outside and leaned against the banister.

Anderson squinted up at me, his boots heavy as they hit each stair. "About?"

"Tubing?" I asked. That was why he was here, right?

"Oh." He shook his head as he hit the top stair, shrugging the bag off his shoulders to hold it by the neck in one fist. "No, I have somewhere to be..." His voice trailed off, and even through the tinted shades of his glasses I felt his eyes on my chest. I'd strapped on my favorite boho print bathing suit and paired it with a dainty gold chain that wrapped around my neck once before dipping between my chest and crossing over my ribs.

He sniffed, holding the bag out toward me. "I just came to drop these off. My clothes. Well, the ones that could probably use a little TLC."

My eyes lit up and I reached for the bag, but Anderson snatched it back, brows shooting up into his forehead.

"No frills, Wren."

I threw my hands up in surrender. "I promise."

He smirked, just slightly, and handed the bag over, tucking his hands in his front pockets.

"Are you sure you don't want to come?" I asked, peering into the bag at my project before setting it just inside the cabin and locking the door behind me.

"I can't," he said, lips pressed together. He was tense, the muscles on his forearms tight as he glanced around at pretty much everything but me.

I opened my mouth to ask why but was cut off by the sound of a truck flying into my drive, tires sliding against the gravel.

Tucker was in the driver's seat with Davie in the passenger. Sarah and Yvette sat in the back, laughing with their hands up as the truck skidded to a stop. They were both sprawled out on a pile of tubes, wearing bathing suit tops and tiny shorts.

All of their faces froze when they saw Anderson.

"Hey, you ready, Wren?" Tucker asked warily, his eyes moving from where Anderson stood in front of me, to me, and back again.

"Yeah, one sec!" I called back.

I turned to Anderson, but his eyes were hard on Tucker, jaw ticking under his skin. When he faced me once more, an anchor fell from my throat into the pit of my stomach, immobilizing me completely. Because even though I 'd tried to convince myself I was wrong, I recognized the look in his eyes.

Possession.

And when his nose flared and he took one big step toward me, our chests brushing, his hand reaching out to rest almost imperceptibly on my hip, the anchor in my stomach exploded into flames, burning a desire so fierce I inhaled a toxic breath and didn't let it go.

"Be careful, okay?" His eyes locked on mine just before he leaned in and swiftly kissed my cheek.

He turned on his heel and jogged down the stairs and past the truck. Sarah called his name, but he didn't acknowledge her, just kept his gaze forward until he'd disappeared from view.

And then everyone looked at me.

My 5 star review of Revelry

awe
/ô/
noun
1. a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder.

"I am in awe of this story, truly beautiful.”

Where the ACTUAL F has Kandi Steiner been all my book nerd life? I am honestly not kidding, like under a rock or what? I need to know these things. I totally feel like she is underrated because she should be amongst the Colleen Hoovers, the Abbi Glines, the Penelope Wards- she is totally A list. If Weightless didn’t convince anyone- A Love Letter to Whiskey, sure as heck should have- but Revelry? It takes it to another level. ALLTW was my number one read of last year, and I am telling you- in a very different way, Revelry might be in my number one spot this year.

mag·nan·i·mous
/maɡˈnanəməs/
adjective
1. very generous or forgiving, especially toward a rival or someone less powerful than oneself.

“Wren was a true to herself, always- she was above all magnanimous, forgiving to a fault.”

Where do I even begin with Wren. While B is my favorite Kandi heroine- I think Wren really took the cake, and pushed B out of the way a bit. It’s cool, B can just go off with Whiskey, and I’ll still love the heck out of her.
And can I just say- reading Kandi’s descriptive words, I really got a handle on who Wren was- not just what she looked like but WHO she was. And she had been put through a lot of sh** and that’s the way love goes sometimes. Between her mother giving her crap for her career choice- which she called a hobby by the way- and for divorcing her ex, sigh… not mothers life, Wrens life; and her ex-husband calling every night at 10pm, hoping she would answer after the divorce was FINAL- what a d*k in a box, she had to escape.
Where else but Gold Bar, a little cabin town about an hour or so away from Seattle. She lived in Seattle and ran a boutique with her bestie/business partner Adrian. Wren, but mostly Adrian, had wanted her to go. She needed to find purpose, to find herself again- and to work on a killer new line for their store. Maybe she was even looking for a real love, someone to set her heart free, one sweet day.

tem·pes·tu·ous
/temˈpesCH(o͞o)əs/
adjective
1. characterized by strong and turbulent or conflicting emotion.

"Anderson had a reckless and tempestuous streak, and he dealt with it the best way he knew how- ignore.”
Anderson- holy mother of hotness, and broodiness, and alpha male-ness. I fell HARD for Anderson- and had the kind of hangover I got with Whiskey from him. Anderson was scarred and scarred deep from an accident seven years ago that left him alone. But not the kind of “alone,” we all associate with romance novels. I thought FOR SURE this guy had lost the love of his life. But losing family can be even more devastating, especially when you only blame yourself for an accident that happened.
From the moment Anderson sees all the LIGHT and LOVE Wren exudes, even down in his dark and twisty heart, he felt a thump and a thwack. And when he got to know her? Fuhgeddaboudit. You know what I actually really LOVED about him? He had never really been in love. He was experiencing all of it with Wren, for the very first time. Anderson was all twisted over Wren- after he had a talking to from his mentor- Anderson figured out he never had a love like this before.

And let me tell you- sexual frustration and sexual gratification- is something Kandi does extremely well. Description is KEY, and alluding to a point instead of being blatant is a talent that she has so much of. When Anderson and Wren finally get to bump n grinding, it’s totally worth the wait- I will tell you I saw FIREWORKS and all the reds, whites, and blues!! It was something out of a sweet sweet fantasy.

e·lec·tri·fy
/əˈlektrəˌfī/
verb
gerund or present participle: electrifying
1. charge with electricity; pass an electric current through.

"Kandi is electrifying”

2. impress greatly; thrill.
"Revelry definitely electrified me with each word.”

Every part of this story is electrifying, magnetic, and just down right unputodownable. If you loved Kandi with Weightless and A Love Letter to Whiskey- don’t let a moment go by and not pick this one up. I absolutely loved all the ins and outs of this story. All the secondary characters that make this romance come to life. Thank you Kandi, I am totally in love with your words. Please don’t ever stop writing whatever you do, it’s who you are.

In the game of love, she never loses.

Paper Fools by Staci Hart is now LIVE!!

cover-wrap-pf

Title: Paper Fools

Author: Staci Hart

Cover Designer: Quirkybird Designs

Photographer: Lauren Watson Perry

Aphrodite knows love — just don’t ask her to figure out her own mess.
Rather than deal with her sticky love life, she toys with the hearts of unwitting humans. It’s a little game she plays, and the stakes are high. Lucky for her, she’s just found the perfect match.
Lex is everything Dean needs, but he can’t have her.
It doesn’t matter that her eyes speak to a long forgotten part of him, or that her art and poetry touch his shredded heart. She’s off limits — crossing that line would implode his band and everything he’s ever cared about. There’s only one option: stay away from her, no matter the cost. Even if the price is his heart.
Dean is everything Lex wants, but she can’t take the risk.
The second she meets him, she knows her heart is in danger. She’s convinced it’s only attraction that has her hung up on the dark, quiet lead singer, but with every day that passes, she knows it’s more. It’s just that she can’t put her heart on the line. She won’t — love has never been worth the sacrifice.
If only they knew they were just pawns in a much bigger game. And in the game of love, Aphrodite never loses.

My 4 star review
i went into this story, knowing nothing but Staci Hart wrote it. i actually did see the cover and loved it- but didn't read the blurb, because DUH, STACI HART is amazing. i am actually really glad i didnt read the blurb- the story turned out to be a breath of fresh air.

Totally different, unexpected- but in a really awesome way. The story meshes Greek Gods and Goddesses living in present day, competing in games with humans, and one of the best is Aphrodite.
She may have a crazy mess of a personal life on her hands- but she just loves to win the game of helping humans meet their match, she competes to win, and this round she is pitted against Apollo.  The rules are: Apollo picks a human, Dita picks a human. If they fall in love during a certain amount of time, Dita wins. If Apollo can stop this from happening, he wins.

Dean is the hero, Lex the heroine. And when they first meet- sparks are definitely flying!! I  mean- they seem like the perfect couple. They are both a little dark and twisty, both definitely have their issues- but i love to see them unfold together.

I really enjoyed how the story flitted back and forth between the Gods and Dean and Lex- it was super fun and intriguing to say the least. I really can't wait to read the next book- wait for the next competitor.

Staci Hart never fails me, and i don't think she ever will. I think this is the perfect read for someone who is trying to mix it up. Stay within the the romance genre- but still have a crazy new trope you've never read before!

Where Good Girls Go to Die release and review!!

Author: Holly Renee
Title: Where Good Girls Go to Die
Series: The Good Girls #1
Release Date: April 13, 2017

It was a bad idea from the beginning.

He was my brother's best friend and the definition of unavailable.

But I didn't care.

I had loved him for as long as I could remember.

He was worth the risk. He was worth everything.

But then he broke my heart as easily as I fell for him. He watched me fall, spiraling out of control, and as I reached for him, he wasn't there to catch me.

So I ran.

Four years later, I never expected to see him again.

He was still my brother's best friend, and he was more unavailable than ever.

He looked every bit the bad boy I knew he was, covered in tattoos and a crooked smile.

Guarding my heart from him was top priority because Parker James was where good girls go to die.

Unfortunately for him, I wasn't a good girl anymore.

"Parker James was all I ever wanted love to be."

Holy hell I devoured this book. I couldn't put it down for one second. I needed to turn the page, read another chapter and find out how Liv and Parker's story played out.

Brother's best friend, friends to lovers - both are my favorite tropes and Where Good Girls Go to Die fit both perfectly.

Liv had been in love with Parker, her brother's best friend forever and when they finally got together, sparks flew. They were finally where they were meant to be until a meddling, lying ex tears it all apart.

Four years later and it's a surprise reunion for Liv and Parker and they clearly are not over each other. They are drawn to each other like moths to a flame and the fire may get them both burned.

This was my first book by Holly Renee and her writing is smooth and effortless. She has created characters you care for and root for, angst to keep you hoping for a HEA and sexual chemistry that's off the charts.

4*

When Parker finally walked in the door, I could feel the darkness that surrounded him.

He set his keys down on the counter and stared at me from across the room.

“You’re still here.” His voice was soft and just hearing it seemed to calm some of my anxiety.

“I told you I would be.”

He nodded his head, but I could see how lost he was in his eyes.

“Are you okay?”

He shook his head and looked away from me.

“I’m just tired. I’m going to jump in the shower. Okay?”

I nodded my head and he made his way up the stairs without a backward glance.

As I watched his back disappear up the stairs, my chest ached. He was hurting. It was clear to see it, but I didn’t know how to make it better. I didn’t know how to make him let me back in.

I walked up the stairs and I heard the shower kick on as I entered his room. He had left the door cracked open, and even though I knew I was invading his privacy, I stood at the door and watched him. His forehead pressed against the shower wall, the cascade of water raining down on him.

I stripped my clothes off until I was completely bare, and I stepped into the shower behind him. He didn’t lift his head when he heard the shower door, but I watched the muscles of his back tense.

“Livy, what are you doing?”

“Parker, please.” I ran my hands down his back before pressing my chest against him.

“I’m sorry, Livy. I’m just fucked up in my head right now. I just need… I don’t know. I need to be alone.”

“Let me help you,” I whispered before I pressed my lips against his back.

He shook his head, water flying around him. “I’m just so mad at myself. I’m so fucking angry.” He slammed his fist against the shower wall, and I wrapped my arms around his chest.

“Take it out on me, Parker. Let me help you let go.”

He turned toward me, finally looking me in the eyes. “I love you, Livy.”

“I know,” I nodded my head, “but fuck me like you don’t.”

Mister Moneybags is LIVE!!

  MMB banner 1

IMG_5273I met Bianca in an elevator.

She was on her way to interview me when we got stuck.

The beautiful, raven-haired reporter assumed I was a delivery guy because of the way I was dressed.

She had no clue I was really Dex Truitt, the wealthy, successful businessman she’d dubbed “Mister Moneybags”—her afternoon appointment.

Bianca told me how much she hated Dex’s type—snobby, over educated, silver- spooned men who didn't appreciate the simple things in life.

So, after the elevator finally started moving again, I cancelled the interview and let her believe I was someone I wasn’t—a bike messenger named Jay. I loved the way she looked at the fake me and didn't want it to end.

I began dating her as “Jay”—all the while letting her interview the real me over email.

I didn’t expect that our chemistry online would be just as hot.

I didn’t expect the mess I’d gotten myself into.

I didn’t expect that Jay and Dex would fall in love with her.

And she was falling for two men.

Only, both men were me.

And when she found out, we were both going to lose her.

Nothing could have prepared me for that day. And I certainly wasn't prepared for what came after.

All good things must come to an end, right? Except our ending was one I didn't see coming.
