By Tracey Garvis Graves

Release Date: August 25

My 4 star review of Heart-Shaped Hack.

I really enjoy Tracey, she has a way about her writing that really makes me fall in love. She is always so funny, and just FUN! This romance made me laugh, and swoon, and it was full of enough cheese to keep me satisfied, but not enough to be over the top. I felt like a dope reading it because she just made me smile from the first page, to the last. The humor, the sarcasm, and the banter were written so well. In a way that only Tracey puts out there

Kate Watts is the heroine, and she is a damn good one at that. The best part about her is that she is totally relatable. I could be Kate- I enjoyed her to pieces. She made the story funny, and interesting. I wanted to know more about her, what made her tick, and why she was just so damn selfless! She quit her high paying lawyer gig to open up a food bank. But the problem is, money runs the world, and she is having trouble paying the bills. Until that is- a Robin Hood of sorts- comes to the rescue.

Ian- the hacker with absolutely zero boundaries, but totally hot and alpha male. Geek chic at its finest! He won Kate’s heart- and mine, without a doubt! And while Ian is cocky- and definitely persistent, he is such a great hero.  The sparks flew between these two as the story progressed.

I really love Tracey’s writing, it’s so natural and free flowing. It was like before I knew it, I was at 50% and then I was finished. Definitely a roller coaster, a plot twist, and of course love. The dialogue was real, the pace was perfection, and the characters were so developed and unbelievably real- but believe it, it was fantastic. And oh my goodness, there will be a book two! So I can’t see where she takes us on our next Kate and Ian journey!

EXCERPT:
Kate was taking a break and having coffee and a muffin at Wilde Roast Café when Ian slid into the booth and sat across from her. He was wearing a lightweight cream-colored sweater with a tan-and-green-patterned shirt underneath, and he smelled good.
“Hello again.”
Confused, Kate looked around. “Where did you come from?”
“I walked in the door like everyone else.”
“Do you live nearby?” Kate lived in the St. Anthony Main neighborhood of Northeast Minneapolis. The food pantry was conveniently located on SE Main Street, which was a short three-block walk from her apartment. The quiet brick-paved street was lined with restaurants, shops, and a movie theater and included a stunning view of the Mississippi River and St. Anthony Falls. There were also bars that featured live music and plenty of green space in nearby parks.
He shook his head. “Not really.”
“Then why are you here?”
“I felt like talking to you again. You’re seated, so you probably won’t try to strangle me this time.”
“How did you know where to find me?” She was tucked away in a back booth instead of one of the tables near the windows that looked out over SE Main, so it wasn’t like he’d walked by and spotted her.
He held a steaming cup of coffee and blew on it to cool it. “I tracked your credit card activity. According to Capital One, you bought a cup of coffee and a muffin here twelve minutes ago.”
“You tracked my credit card?” Her voice sounded rather loud and shrieky.
He held a finger in front of his mouth. “Shh, Katie Long Legs. That information is for your ears only. How’s your coffee? Would you like a refill?”
Kate did not appreciate being shushed, but she lowered her voice. “Are you some kind of cyberthief?” she whispered. And since when were criminals so well-dressed and impeccably groomed?
“I did not steal your credit card number. I simply accessed your account to see where and when you’d used it last. Then I came here.”
“If you wanted to talk to me again, why didn’t you just go to the food pantry?”
He looked at her like it was obvious. “Because you’re not there. You’re here at this café.”
“If you’re not a cyberthief, then what are you?”
“I’m a hacker.”
“Is there a difference?”
“Most definitely.”
“When you said you steal from the rich to give to the poor, I thought you were kidding. Is that how you get the money?”
“I don’t steal it. I appropriate it from people who shouldn’t have it in the first place. Then I give it to those who are more deserving.”
Kate twisted her napkin. “I can’t keep the money. I’ve already spent the first two donations, but if you come back to the food pantry with me, I can return the most recent one. It’s still locked in the safe because I wasn’t planning on going shopping until tomorrow.”
“No, Katie. I don’t want it back. It’s for you. It’s for the babies.”
“It’s wrong,” she said quietly.
“Is it?”
“It’s against the law.”
“Trust me when I say the people I took it from don’t want the law involved any more than I do.”
“What are you saying? That you’re a thief who steals from other thieves?”
He wrinkled his nose, and it was adorable.
Stop! Thief!
“It sounds so distasteful when you say it like that. I prefer master appropriator of ill-gotten funds. You can call me master for short.”
“I have lots of things I’d like to call you. Master is not one of them.”

EXCERPT 2

Ian took off his glasses and slid them into the pocket of his jacket.
“I like those,” she said. “Put them back on.”
“They’ll only be in the way when I kiss you.”
“Who said we were going to kiss?”
“I did. Katie, you must pay closer attention. Besides, this is the end of our first official date. Why wouldn’t we kiss? Sharing a kiss is quite common at this stage.”
“I know how dating works.” Although truthfully, she was a bit rusty and hadn’t kissed anyone since Stuart.
“This hallway is awfully bright. I would prefer more romantic lighting, like the kind inside your apartment.”
“You don’t get to come in again until the second date.”
“The only thing I took away from that statement is that we’re going to have a second date.”
Kate smiled.
It really was incredibly bright in the hallway. Kate almost wished Ian hadn’t told her he was going to kiss her and that it was a bit darker, because she was suddenly hit with a bout of first-date-kiss nerves that made her fidget.
“I’ll just wait until you stop moving.”
She made herself stand still. He slid his hands underneath her jaw, and his fingers came to rest behind her ears while his thumbs grazed her cheek. His first kiss was soft and gentle and only lasted a few seconds. He pulled back a few inches and came in again, giving her another soft kiss. The third was firmer, more aggressive, and he dipped his tongue lightly into her mouth. The fourth was soft again, leaving Kate in a heady and intoxicating state of anticipation about what the next kiss would be like. Number five was almost her undoing because Ian pressed his body closer to hers and gave her a deep, openmouthed kiss while circling her tongue with his. When he finally pulled back, it took her a moment to regulate her breathing. She was holding on to his neck rather tightly because her legs felt like Jell-O.
“You seem a bit wobbly, Katie.”
“I’ve got to hand it to you. Your kissing skills almost make up for your shortcomings.”
“I have shortcomings? Really?”
“A couple, yes.”
“I’d promise to work on them, but we both know I’m not going to.”

EXCERPT 3

She turned the corner onto her street, then stopped short when she saw a flash of blue. Ian’s car was parked at the curb, and he was leaning up against it, smiling.
Her Sunday had just gotten a whole lot more interesting.
She walked up to him. “Are you ever not smiling?”
“Why wouldn’t I be smiling? It’s awesome being me.”
“Been waiting long?”
“About an hour. I’d almost given up on you.”
“I was at brunch with the girls.”
He checked her out, not bothering to hide the way his gaze traveled slowly from her head to her feet. “You look amazing. I am fascinated by those boots.”
Kate unbelted her trench coat. “What about my sweater? A friend bought several of them for me.”
“It’s very nice, and that is an excellent color on you. What else did this friend buy you?”
“He bought me some pajamas. I love them.”
“He thought you might. Was there anything else?”
“There was a black babydoll nightie.”
“Did it fit?”
“It fit perfectly. I’m going to save it for a special evening should there be one in my future.”
“Oh there will be, Katie. He’ll make sure of it.” He opened the passenger door. “I was wondering if you have plans for the rest of the day.”
Kate got in, and after Ian closed the door, he walked around to the driver’s side and slid behind the wheel.
“That depends,” she said. “What did you have in mind?”
He started the car. “You’ll see.”
